TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Russian government is willing to assist Indonesia in developing civil nuclear technology. Putin made the statement following a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, local time.
"There are many prospects in the energy sector, including nuclear energy. I know that Indonesia does have plans related to this, and if Indonesia decides to involve Russia, we are always ready to help," Putin was quoted as saying in an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
In addition, Putin expressed the commitment to strengthen bilateral relations with Indonesia. According to him, the Russia-Indonesia relationship continues to show a positive trend, especially as the two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for 75 years.
"The joint economic commission is also working well. Our trade cooperation has also developed during the first 9 months of this year, with our trade value increasing by 17 percent," Putin said.
The two leaders also discussed the potential for cooperation in the industrial and agricultural sectors. Putin mentioned that the issue of wheat was also discussed with Prabowo.
In the defense industry sector, Putin referred to Indonesia as a traditional partner of Russia. He highlighted the solid progress in military technical cooperation and the increasing number of Indonesian military personnel receiving education in Russian military institutions.
"Many Indonesian military experts have also enrolled in our higher military education institutions. We are ready to increase these numbers," he said.
Putin also addressed the improvement of relations in the humanitarian and tourism sectors, supported by direct flight connectivity and visa-free policies between the two countries.
Regarding Indonesia's role in the international arena, Putin expressed his appreciation for Indonesia's full membership in BRICS, and touched on discussions about the possibility of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
On that occasion, Prabowo expressed appreciation for the warm welcome from the Russian Government amidst President Putin's packed state agenda. "Thank you for receiving me. I understand President Putin's schedule is very busy," said President Prabowo in the meeting introduction as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
Prabowo mentioned that in recent months, several Russian government and business delegations have visited Jakarta. The Indonesian government, he said, has facilitated meetings between industry players and national companies with Russian partners to expedite the realization of various strategic cooperation.
During the occasion, President Prabowo also extended an official invitation to President Putin to make a state visit to Indonesia. The invitation is open for either 2026 or 2027. He encouraged Putin to adjust his schedule.
"I also want to invite Your Excellency to Indonesia whenever you have the opportunity. Whether it's in 2026 or 2027, there's no problem, we hope you will visit Indonesia as well. Don't just go to India," said President Prabowo with a light laugh.
