Russian Ambassador Says Moscow Ready for Peace Deal With Ukraine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia remains ready to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine, Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Sergey Tolchenov said, claiming that Moscow has been open to negotiations since the conflict began in 2022.

"From the very beginning, since 2022, we have said that we are ready for a peace agreement," Tolchenov said during a press briefing in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Tolchenov claimed that Russia and Ukraine had reached a peace framework in 2022 through negotiations between the two sides, but the agreement was never signed.

He alleged that then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson persuaded Ukraine to continue the war, preventing the deal from being finalized.

"We are ready to continue discussions based on the agreements that were reached. Recently, President Putin said he is ready to meet Zelenskyy if Zelenskyy comes to Moscow. So, this is not an issue," Tolchenov said.

However, Tolchenov said reaching a peace agreement remains difficult because, according to him, European countries are encouraging Kyiv to continue the conflict.

The Russian envoy said Moscow wants a "comprehensive, long-term, and sustainable" agreement that would take into account Russia's national interests.

"This includes no NATO bases on Ukrainian territory, Ukraine's non-nuclear and non-aligned status, and respect for the human rights of national minorities in Ukraine, including Russian-speaking citizens and Russian citizens in Ukrainian territory," he said.

Tolchenov added that any peace agreement should also address territorial issues that Russia considers settled, including Crimea, Kherson, Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia.

He said all of these issues must be included in a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, adding that Moscow is prepared to engage in dialogue in any format.
