SETARA Institute Accuses TNI of Sabotaging Andrie Yunus Case

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the National Council of SETARA Institute, Hendardi, assesses that the Indonesian Military (TNI) has sabotaged law enforcement in the acid attack on activist Andrie Yunus. He mentioned that case developments presented by the TNI have confused the public.

The TNI Military Police Center (Puspom) recently announced the detention of four soldiers suspected of involvement in the assault. Puspom stated that these four individuals have been held at the Military Police Command (Pomdam) Jaya since Wednesday morning, March 18, 2026.

However, the TNI's findings stand in stark contrast to the investigation results released almost simultaneously by the Indonesian National Police (Polri). "It is clear that the TNI has, in fact, sabotaged and interrupted Polri's law enforcement process through the narrative conveyed to the public via their press conference," Hendardi stated in a written brief on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

According to Hendardi, the TNI's briefing appeared to be a calculated attempt to obscure the truth behind the case. "For the victim and the public, particularly the civilian community, the progress of law enforcement is concerning," he remarked.

The SETARA Institute has since urged President Prabowo Subianto to form a Joint Fact-Finding Team (TGPF) to uncover the facts, including identifying both the field operatives and the intellectual actors behind the strike on Andrie.

Puspom TNI identified the four detainees by the initials NDP, SL, BWH, and ES, all of whom are members of the Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) from the air force and navy.

In a confusing turn of events, the police also revealed their own set of identities for the suspected perpetrators. These disclosures, however, did not match the initials provided by the military.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police identified two attackers with the initials BHC and MAK. The police showcased their photographs during a press conference at the South Jakarta Regional Police Headquarters on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

The brutal assault occurred when two unidentified individuals splashed acid on Andrie Yunus, the External Coordinator Deputy of KontraS, on Thursday night, March 12, 2026, around 11:37 p.m. on Salemba I-Talang Street, Central Jakarta.

Andrie was subsequently rushed to the Emergency Unit of Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in the early hours of Friday, March 13, 2026. He suffered severe burns to his face, neck, chest, back, and both arms, along with vision impairment in his right eye, with the chemical burns covering more than 20 percent of his body.

Dede Leni Mardianti and Annisa Febiola contributed to the report.
