Rangers are preparing to hold talks with Steven Gerrard about a possible return to the Ibrox, a report has claimed.

Gerrard, 45, has been out of management since leaving Saudi Arabia giants Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent last January — but a return to the dugout could finally be on the cards with the team that kickstarted his managerial career.

The Liverpool legend steered Rangers to a sensational unbeaten season in 2020-21, as the club chalked up 102 points and won both Old Firm derbies over rivals Celtic.

His stint at the Ibrox, which spanned three years between 2018 and 2021, led to Gerrard landing the managerial role at Aston Villa on a three-and-half year contract following the dismissal of Dean Smith.

Gerrard has since struggled to replicate the impressive record he displayed at Rangers during his spells with Villa and Al-Ettifaq, whom he joined in January 2024 after being sacked by the Premier League outfit after less than a year in charge.

According to Sky Sports News, Rangers' American owners have earmarked Gerrard as a potential successor to Russell Martin after the Scot was axed from his duties earlier this week.

Under Martin, Rangers had won just once, drawn five times and lost once during their opening seven games of the new season.

It is understood Gerrard is open to the opportunity, with a meeting scheduled to take place before the weekend, but that discussions will not be straightforward.

The Liverpool legend is not the only candidate being considered at the Ibrox, with the club are keeping tabs on several other potential options.

Gerrard revealed in an interview this week that he has unfinished business as a manager - and admits he would jump at the chance if the right club came calling.

He also described his time at Rangers as ‘the perfect match’, having initial talks with the club prior to Martin being appointed back in the summer.

Those talks never went any further due to Gerrard expressing a reluctance about the possibility of having to uproot his family from their life in Bahrain.

Daily Mail Sport understands that his personal circumstances have not changed since then, but he insists the door is by no means closed on his career in management following spells with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.
