TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of students united in All-Indonesia Executive Board of Student Alliance (BEM SI) will hold another rally titled Indonesia Gelap (Dark Indonesia) in Jakarta on Thursday, February 20, 2025. They will once again put the pressure on government to be responsible for the increasingly worsening state of the country.
The Central Coordinator of BEM SI, Herianto, explained that the date was selected to align with the inauguration of elected regional heads on February 20, 2025.
He added that the students aim to collectively remind the newly elected leaders of their moral duty to deliver justice for the people.
"So the burden is not only on the central government. The regional government also needs to consider their position there," said Herianto when contacted on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Herianto stated that the demonstration will continue because the government did not respond to the students' aspirations during their previous rally on Monday, February 17, 2025. Herianto hopes the government will quickly respond to the students' concerns because the public is waiting.
Hundreds of students from various universities took to the streets to hold a demonstration at the Patung Kuda area in Central Jakarta on Monday, February 17, 2025.
The demonstration organized by BEM SI and a civil society coalition arose from public concerns about the performance of the Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka government cabinet.
During yesterday's protest, BEM SI presented several demands. Among them, the students called for the revocation of the budget reduction policy as it has a detrimental impact on the people, particularly because it affects the education budget.
BEM SI also demanded transparency in development, claiming that many national strategic projects (PSN) harm the public through forced evictions.
Furthermore, BEM SI called for the rejection of the Mining Bill revision, the rejection of the dual function of the Indonesian Military (TNI), and the enactment of the asset confiscation bill.
