Jimmy Thelin has urged his players to carry the spirit shown in their UEFA Conference League defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk into their crucial Premiership clash at home to Dundee on Sunday.

Aberdeen received a rousing ovation from their fans despite losing 3-2 to their Ukrainian opponents at Pittodrie.

Now Thelin hopes it can be a springboard to improve their shocking domestic form which sees them sitting bottom of the Premiership with just one point and no goals so far this season.

‘The positive thing was that we connected with the fans, we showed our personality,’ said the Aberdeen manager.

‘We have to build from this and show we are always fighting hard for them.

‘They pushed us to the last minute and we need to have this mentality in every game. We need to show the same desire and passion in a very important game on Sunday.

Jesper Karlsson (centre) scored his first goal for the club to put the Dons in front on Thursday

Nicky Devlin also got on the scoresheet but it was wasn't enough to earn a share of the spoils

‘Of course we are disappointed to lose the game tonight but we are proud of the players in the way they pushed a very good team.

‘We now have a difficult part of the season but when we release the hand brake and show our personality on the pitch, you see what we can do at Pittodrie.

‘The fans feel they can believe in us and we have to show that from now on. Of course it is an important game against Dundee.

‘They are ahead of us in the table. We need to fight for every metre on the pitch. I don’t need to speak about our situation anymore, we know where we are in the league and that we haven’t scored.

'We need to look forward. It’s about action, not words now.’
