TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Donald Trump imposed a new tariff on all films outside the United States on Sunday. Trump claimed that Hollywood is "dying" because of the trend of American film producers and studios working overseas.
The announcement comes as the White House faces increasing criticism over its aggressive trade policies, with Trump imposing broad tariffs on countries worldwide.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump has instructed the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of applying a 100 percent tariff on all films entering our country that are produced in foreign countries, as reported by Channel NewsAsia on Monday, May 5, 2025.
Trump's post comes after China, a target of the U.S. president's confrontational trade policy of 145 percent tariffs on many goods, said last month that it would reduce the number of U.S. movies it imports.
Trump said the American film industry is dying very quickly. Other countries offer various incentives to lure our film producers and studios away from the United States.
He added Hollywood and many other areas in the United States are being destroyed, claiming that this poses a threat to U.S. national security.
The implications for the film industry, or how exactly the tariffs will be implemented, remain unclear. Trump's post also makes no mention of television series, a production sector for the increasingly popular and lucrative screen.
