Two New York Yankees fans were brutally tackled to the ground by stadium security after invading the field during their crucial playoff victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

In the top of the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium, the invaders delayed Tuesday night's game by several minutes after bursting onto the field, with the first one running through the outfield as security gave chase.

An officer in a blue shirt then emerged from the first base side of the stadium and slammed him to the floor, before other guards arrived to help detain him.

Yet just as they thwarted the first, one member of security leapt to his feet and sprinted elsewhere as it quickly became clear another fan had made it onto the field.

The second invader made his way to the infield before two officers brought him crashing to the deck.

They both appeared to be waving white Yankees jerseys and wearing T-shirts containing a QR code on the field, though it is unclear what message they were trying to send if any.

The Yankees were trailing 6-3 at the time of the disruption, but they seemed to benefit from it after going on to claim a vital 9-6 win which has kept their playoff hopes alive.

After falling 2-0 down in the series, Aaron Boone's men knew defeat to the Blue Jays would have ended their season on Tuesday night.

However, in the following half inning after the field invasion, Aaron Judge blasted a three-run home run to tie the game, before a Jazz Chisholm Jr. long ball handed the Yankees a 7-6 lead.

They now trail Toronto 1-2 heading into Wednesday's Game 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Before Tuesday's Game 3, Yankees fans sparked controversy by jeering the Canadian national anthem in the Bronx.

New York supporters were branded 'classless' and 'pathetic' after footage showed the rendition of 'O Canada' being drowned out by boos on the night.
