Unai Emery criticises his own Aston Villa players as Spaniard hits out at side's lack of discipline in search of first Premier League win of the season

Unai Emery has criticised some of his Aston Villa players for lacking discipline as they seek their first league win of the season.

Villa had Joao Gomes sent off on his debut on the opening day of the campaign when they lost 4-0 at Brighton, and Emery took off Nicolas Jackson at half-time of last weekend's home defeat by Nottingham Forest as he feared the forward would receive a second yellow card.

Villa have had seven other bookings in their first four Premier League fixtures, as well as three in the Champions League win over Club Brugge, and three more in the Carabao Cup victory at Coventry.

Emery said: 'We must control our emotions, individually. We must reduce red cards but also some yellow cards are not necessary.

'Aaron Wan-Bissaka's yellow card at Coventry (for squaring up to Gustavo Hamer) was not normal. He and Jackson are experienced players and they must control it.

'We've spoken about it in the dressing room. It's very important in terms of how we want to build our mentality. We need to focus on playing.'

Part of the reason former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca lost patience with Jackson was the forward's habit of picking up yellow cards.

Jackson has yet to score in the Premier League for Villa since moving from Stamford Bridge for £65million in the summer.
