TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Faculty of Medicine Universitas Padjajaran (Unpad) is participating in the phase 3 clinical trial of the candidate tuberculosis (TB) vaccine M72, funded by The Gates Foundation, owned by Bill Gates. The trial aims to evaluate the vaccine candidate's safety and effectiveness.
"I am confident that Unpad will fulfill this responsibility well because we have experts in this field," said the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Unpad, Yudi Mulyana Hidayat, in a written statement on Monday, May 12, 2025.
Yudi stated that Unpad is currently very prepared to conduct the clinical trial of the vaccine candidate and collaborate with any party. "Because the clinical trial equipment and experts are available at Unpad," he said. In addition, Unpad has been entrusted to host vaccine development training for researchers from member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) through the Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation or the Comstech Fellowship Program.
According to Unang, a professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Unpad, involved in the training, in the past three years, Unpad and PT Bio Farma have hosted vaccine development training for researchers from OIC member countries.
The training took place at the Central Laboratory of Unpad Jatinangor. It aims to enhance capacity and mastery of vaccine technology in OIC countries by transferring knowledge and practical skills, based on Indonesia's experience in vaccine development and clinical trials. Countries involved in the training include Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Cameroon, Senegal, Somalia, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Jordan, Sudan, Kazakhstan, and Uganda.
As for the new TB vaccine currently in the clinical trial phase, leading medical institutions such as the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Universitas Indonesia Hospital, Persahabatan Hospital, Cempaka Putih Islamic Hospital in Jakarta, and the Faculty of Medicine, Unpad are involved. The clinical trial of the TB vaccine candidate started on September 3, 2024, and official participant recruitment was completed on April 16, 2025.
In addition to Indonesia, the phase 3 clinical trial vaccine candidate is also being conducted in four other countries, namely South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, and Malawi. The vaccine candidate has been under development since the early 2000s and is claimed to have shown a good safety profile in previous studies. The Gates Foundation is developing this vaccine candidate, and the entire clinical trial process is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
