West Java Hit by Earthquakes, Some Linked to Megathrust Zone

3 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake rocked parts of Sukabumi and Cianjur regencies, West Java, on Thursday evening and Friday morning, July 30-31, 2026. The earthquake originated from different epicenters on land and at sea.

The tremor shook the Cianjur region with a magnitude of 1.9 on Friday at 03:06 a.m. local time. According to the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Regional II Tangerang, Hartanto, the earthquake center was on land, 6 kilometers southwest of Cianjur Regency. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 18 kilometers.

According to a written statement shared after the earthquake, the trigger was from active fault activity. The impact of the tremor was felt in the Cianjur region at an intensity of I-II MMI, meaning that the earthquake was felt by some people indoors and only caused light hanging objects to sway.

Previously, on Thursday at 6:17 p.m., a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 shook the Sukabumi region. The epicenter of this earthquake was located at sea, 86 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi Regency, at a depth of 39 kilometers.

"A shallow earthquake due to subduction activity, or the thrusting of the Indo-Australian plate into Eurasia," said Hartanto, explaining the cause of the earthquake. The earthquake center was thus located in the megathrust zone.

According to reports from the community, the tremor was felt in the Ciracap region on the MMI scale at an intensity of II-III, with the strongest tremors felt indoors resembling the sensation of a passing truck. Meanwhile, in the Pelabuhan Ratu region, it was felt at a scale of II MMI.

There have been no reports of building damage resulting from these earthquakes so far. Based on BMKG's observations, these are currently the most recent earthquakes whose tremors can be felt in Indonesia.
