TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Advertised as being bulletproof, Tesla's Cybertruck has received mixed reactions for this specific feature. With many complaints against the sturdy claim, Tesla is once again causing concerns after the New Year's accident with its Cybertruck which occurred in early 2025.
Reuters reported on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, that a Tesla Cybertruck was involved in an explosion outside the Trump International Hotel Las Vegas, killing the driver and injuring seven others.
The news brings horror to the public as they continue to question the credibility of the Cybertruck and what the car is really made of. To take things further, this article will discuss the body structures of a Tesla’s Cybertruck according to various sources.
What is Cybertruck Made of?
The body structure of a Cybertruck is made of varying grades of aluminum or steel, as per Tesla's official site. Despite the bulletproof promises made during the first launch event back in 2019, the metal components of the Cybertruck are apparently prone to rust under certain circumstances.
At the same event, it was originally claimed that the futuristic car would be made of the identical stainless steel used by sister company SpaceX for its Starship spacecraft. According to Motor Trend, if the plan was legit, Cybertruck would be coated by 301 stainless steel and 3-mm thick.
Tesla mentioned that the metal components of its Cybertruck series might be cast, stamped, or extruded depending on the urgency of the repair. Even so, specific operations should adhere to the repair guidelines provided by the company.
In addition to its unique exterior design, the Cybertruck is equipped with an aircraft-inspired steer-by-wire system and boasts a towing capacity of up to 11,000 pounds. According to Car and Driver, this massive stainless-steel vehicle is available in a 600-horsepower dual-motor all-wheel-drive version, as well as the "Beast," which is one of the fastest pickups, achieving a 0-60 mph time of just 2.6 seconds.
Cybertruck Allegedly Rusting
The stainless steel body of Cybertruck is perhaps one of its biggest downturns, as many owners have reported rusting conditions following extreme weather changes. According to Wired, the giant hunks tend to develop orange rust and metal corrosion once exposed to rain showers.
Apparently, the Cybertruck does not come with a standard clear coat used on an average new motor vehicle. Instead, owners can opt to purchase an additional $5,000 urethane-based film made of premium satin clear paint film for better protection of their Cybertrucks.
Cybertruck Warranty and Maintenance
Tesla provides a comprehensive warranty plan for its Cybertrucks that includes the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty, the Supplemental Restraint System Limited Warranty, the Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty, and the Body and Rust Limited Warranty, each with the following terms and conditions:
The Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty covers 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The Supplemental Restraint System Limited Warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The Battery and Drive Unit covers 8 years or a range of miles from 100,000 to 150,000 depending on the model.
- The Body Rust Limited Warranty covers rust perforation (a hole through the vehicle’s body panel from the inside out) resulting from a defect in material or workmanship. The Body Rust Limited Warranty covers your vehicle for 12 years and unlimited miles.
While the Tesla Cybertruck continues to capture the public's attention with its bold design and cutting-edge features, its recent incidents and concerns about its durability have raised significant questions. For the current moment, the public remains divided on the true reliability of the Cybertruck.
