What Is Nusantara Explorer, the New Luxury Train Tested by Prabowo?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto tested KA Nusantara Explorer, a new premium-class sleeper train launched by state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), as part of efforts to develop luxury rail services and support tourism in Indonesia.

Prabowo boarded the train on Thursday, July 30, 2026, after inaugurating the restoration of the heritage Tawang Station in Semarang, Central Java. He then continued his trip to Batang, Central Java, aboard the newly introduced luxury service.

"Today, I will try the new train launched by KAI to support and boost tourism, named Nusantara Explorer," Prabowo said before boarding the train, according to the Presidential Secretariat.

A New Luxury Sleeper Train Concept

The Nusantara Explorer adopts a luxury sleeper train concept designed to provide a premium travel experience for passengers.

According to KAI, two units of the train have completed interior renovations at Balai Yasa Surabaya Gubeng, KAI's railway maintenance facility.

The service combines several premium features, including private sleeping cabins, personalized services, dining facilities, entertainment options, and large windows designed to allow passengers to enjoy Indonesia's scenery throughout the journey.

Three Sleeper Cabin Categories

The Nusantara Explorer offers three types of sleeper cabins to accommodate different passenger preferences:

  • Signature Class, featuring spacious and private facilities for a more exclusive experience.

  • Advanced Class, offering an efficient cabin layout designed for comfortable sleeping.

  • Compact Class, providing a smaller but practical resting space.

Beyond sleeper cabins, the train is also equipped with a restaurant area as its main dining facility. Passengers can also access a lounge featuring comfortable seating, a bar, a piano, and an audio system for relaxation and social activities.

Prabowo Wants More Comfortable Rail Services

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said Prabowo's trial ride was part of the President's push for KAI to provide more comfortable and elegant passenger services.

"President Prabowo rode the Nusantara Explorer Train to Batang for a trial run. This train is the President's desire for KAI to provide a beautiful, elegant, and comfortable passenger train service for the public," Teddy said.

The launch of the Nusantara Explorer is part of Indonesia's efforts to improve rail infrastructure and promote domestic tourism through higher-quality transportation services.
