TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The authorities of Bromo Tengger Semeru (BTS) National Park blocked entry from Malang and Lumajang Regencies late Monday, August 3, 2026, following blazes in the Bantengan Bloc inside the area.

The head of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, said wildfires broke out on Monday afternoon, around 5:00 p.m. local time. Rudijanta mentioned that entrances to Bromo through the Jemplang, Coban Trisula (Malang), and Senduro (Lumajang) have been closed for visitors.

"We are doing this to facilitate fire extinguishing efforts and to ensure the safety of visitors," said Rudijanta in a written statement received by Tempo on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

Visitors can still enter Bromo through the Cemoro Lawang (Probolinggo) and Wonokitri (Pasuruan) entrances. "Visitors are barred from entering the savanna, but are allowed to visit the Sea of Sand," he said, referring to the wide plains that surround Mount Bromo, locally known as Lautan Pasir.

The partial closure of the national park will remain in effect indefinitely. He also urged visitors and tourism agencies to avoid triggering wildfires at the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park by taking special caution while using fire for the safety, security, and comfort of everyone.

The head of the Probolinggo Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Umar Syarif, said the wildfires broke out on the cliffs at the border of Probolinggo, Malang, and Lumajang. Efforts to combat the fire have been made by creating partitions to prevent it from spreading further.

Difficulties in putting out the fire are exacerbated by the inaccesibility of the cliffs. Authorities are also concerned about the fire spreading due to strong winds. "We are monitoring the situation continuously," Umar informed Tempo on Tuesday morning, August 4, 2026.

By the time this article is written, the extent of the burned area is not yet known. The cause of the wildfire also remains unknown.

The spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, mentioned that the wildfires across several regions of Indonesia are triggered, among other factors, by the dry season. The head of the Data, Information, and Communication Center of BNPB urged citizens and local governments to enhance readiness.

"It is strictly prohibited to clear land by burning, dispose of cigarette butts carelessly, or burn trash in open areas without supervision, especially during hot and windy weather," said Muhari.

For residents in areas affected by the smoke from the fire, it is advised to always wear a mask when conducting activities outside to avoid respiratory problems. If there are potential indications of a fire outbreak, the public is encouraged to immediately contact the local BPBD or village authorities.
