2026 World Cup: Uzbekistan vs Colombia Prediction

7 hours ago 24

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Uzbekistan national team will face Colombia in the opening match of Group K at the 2026 World Cup at Estadio Banorte, Mexico City, on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 09:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This match, which will be broadcasted on TVRI, marks a historic moment for Uzbekistan as they make their first appearance in the final rounds of the World Cup.

Colombia's coach, Nestor Lorenzo, believes that Uzbekistan cannot be underestimated despite being debutants. He stated that the global development of football means that there are no easy opponents in major tournaments such as the World Cup.

"The World Cup shows that there are no small teams and no opponents to be taken lightly. Uzbekistan has achieved some very good results, they have an exceptional coach, several quality players, and are a very well-organized team who know exactly how they want to play. That's our challenge tomorrow," Lorenzo said, as quoted from FIFA's official website.

Uzbekistan qualified for the 2026 World Cup after finishing in the top two in the third round of Asia's qualification zone. This success makes them the first Central Asian country to reach the final rounds of the World Cup.

Uzbekistan's journey to this tournament is largely attributed to the contribution of team captain Eldor Shomurodov. The forward, now playing for Istanbul Basaksehir, played a crucial role in the qualifiers with five goals and four assists.

On the other hand, Colombia comes with much more experience. Los Cafeteros are making their seventh appearance in the World Cup finals after finishing third in the South American qualification zone (CONMEBOL).

Colombia's best achievement in the World Cup was reaching the quarter-finals in the 2014 edition in Brazil. After failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, they now return with a squad led by experienced players such as James Rodriguez and Luis Daz.

Analysis of Winning Opportunities

The Opta supercomputer favors Colombia to win the opening match of Group K. Based on 25,000 simulations conducted prior to the match, Colombia won in 67.7 percent of the simulations. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan's chance to win their debut match is estimated at only 11.7 percent. The likelihood of a draw is estimated at 20.6 percent.

Historical data also shows that Colombia rarely plays to a goalless draw in the World Cup. Out of the 22 matches they have played in the tournament, none ended with a 0-0 score. Only Austria has played more matches without ever recording a goalless draw in the World Cup.

Head-to-Head Record

This will be the first encounter between Uzbekistan and Colombia. Uzbekistan has only faced a South American team once, defeating Bolivia 1-0 in a friendly match in March 2023. Shomurodov scored the lone goal in that match.

Meanwhile, Colombia's last match against an Asian representative in the World Cup ended in a 2-1 defeat to Japan in the opening match of the 2018 World Cup. However, Colombia was able to bounce back and finish the group stage as the winners of Group H after defeating Poland and Senegal.

Predicted Lineups

Uzbekistan (3-4-2-1): Utkir Yusupov; Abdulla Abdullaev, Rustam Ashurmatov, Abdukodir Khusanov; Farrukh Sayfiev, Otabek Shukurov, Odiljon Khamrobekov, Sherzod Nasrullaev; Abbosbek Fayzullaev, Oston Urunov; Eldor Shomurodov.

Colombia (4-2-3-1): Camilo Vargas; Daniel Munoz, Davinson Sanchez, Jhon Lucum, Johan Mojica; Jefferson Lerma, Richard Ros; Luis Daz, James Rodrguez, Santiago Arias; Luis Suarez.

Prediction

Colombia is favored due to their experience, individual quality, and stronger squad depth. However, Uzbekistan has solid gameplay organization and high motivation to create a surprise in their World Cup debut. If they can contain the creativity of James Rodrguez and the speed of Luis Daz, Uzbekistan has the potential to make it difficult for Los Cafeteros.
