TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Koreans are currently celebrating Chuseok, often referred to as the Korean version of Thanksgiving.

This year, the holiday falls on Monday, October 6, 2025, with the government declaring public holidays through October 9, which also marks Hangeul Day.

As one of Korea’s most important traditional festivals, Chuseok is a time to express gratitude for the harvest and strengthen family bonds. The celebrations blend old and new traditions—families wear hanbok, make songpyeon (half-moon rice cakes), join cultural festivals, and enjoy folk dances like ganggangsullae, creating a vibrant festive atmosphere across the country.

Beyond family reunions, Chuseok is also a moment for Koreans to celebrate togetherness and preserve ancestral customs amid modern life. During this long weekend, both residents and tourists in Seoul can enjoy a variety of cultural and leisure activities, although some businesses may operate on limited hours.

Antje, a German traveler living in Korea, shared several Chuseok activity recommendations on her blog Next Stop Korea. Here are some highlights for visitors spending the holiday in Seoul:

1. Enjoy Cultural Experiences

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has prepared numerous cultural events and traditional games in city parks. Several royal palaces, including Gyeongbokgung, are open to the public free of charge during the holiday.

Visitors can also watch the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at Gwanghwamun Gate, held twice daily at 10:00 AM and 02:00 PM

2. Visit Historical Sites

A must-visit destination during Chuseok is Namsangol Hanok Village, where guests can experience Korea’s traditional ambiance through folk games, performances, and craft activities. After exploring the hanok village, tourists can ride the Namsan Cable Car to enjoy a panoramic view of Seoul from above.

3. Admire the Cityscape

The iconic N Seoul Tower, located atop Namsan Mountain, offers breathtaking views of the capital. Visitors can also enjoy daily cultural shows at 3:00 p.m. and take photos in the observation deck adorned with “love locks,” a popular symbol of eternal promises among couples.

For a different perspective, head to the Seoul Sky Observatory in Lotte Tower, Jamsil District. From 555 meters above the ground, the observatory features interactive exhibits and the thrilling Sky Bridge Tour, allowing visitors to walk across Korea’s tallest building.

4. Watch Live Performances

For fans of performing arts, two crowd favorites—“Nanta Cooking Show” and “Painters Show”—are not to be missed. Nanta combines comedy, percussion, and cooking in a high-energy performance, while Painters showcases live painting mixed with multimedia and humor that captivates audiences of all ages.

5. Picnic by the Han River

For a more relaxed outing, both locals and tourists can enjoy a picnic at Yeouido or Banpo Han River Park. The parks are ideal for cycling along the riverside and soaking in the autumn breeze.

As night falls, the Banpo Bridge Rainbow Fountain dazzles visitors with its colorful light-and-water show. A scenic Han River night cruise offers another memorable way to end the day under Seoul’s sparkling skyline.

6. Explore Amusement Parks

The Chuseok spirit also fills amusement parks such as Everland, Lotte World, and Seoul Land, where festive parades, seasonal decorations, and special discounts await. Visitors can also sample songpyeon, the signature rice cake of the harvest festival, as part of the joyful experience.
