Aceh Temporarily Closes Zero Kilometer Monument, Citing Safety Reasons

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Zero Kilometer Monument, located in the Weh Island Natural Tourist Park, Sabang City, Sabang, Aceh, has been temporarily closed to visitors starting from May 22, citing safety reasons.

Head of the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Ujang Wisnu Barata, confirmed that the monument is closed for an unspecified period of time.

"Visits to the Zero Kilometer Monument in the Natural Tourist Park, Sabang City, are temporarily closed for the safety of visitors due to the potential danger to the damaged ornaments of the monument," he said in Banda Aceh on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

The reparation process is underway, he said, and the closure will remain in effect until the repair is complete and the monument is declared safe to visit.

Loose Ornaments on the Monument

Meanwhile, the head of the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (ASPPI) of Aceh, Azwani Awi, expressed concern over the condition of the Zero Kilometer Monument, stating that the monument's structure also poses a danger to visitors.

"We hope for serious attention to the condition of the Zero Kilometer Monument so it does not endanger visitors and lead to casualties," said Azwani Awi. Awi admitted to visiting the monument with a number of tourists on Friday, May 23, 2025.

He mentioned that the typical Acehnese motif ornament on the monument is detached. The rencong (traditional weapon of Aceh) is dangling and just abides the time to come loose and fall.

"The Zero Kilometer Monument is an icon of tourism in the Aceh Province, especially in Sabang City. Therefore, we must ensure the monument is clear of danger to tourists," said Azwani Awi.

The Sabang monument is known as the geographic marker of the westernmost point of Indonesia. The two-story, 43-meter-high monument has the shape of the number zero, with rencong on its two sides. At the top of the predominantly blue monument, there is an eagle, which symbolizes clutching the unity of the zero-kilometer point monument.
