TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI is questioning PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara's policy of importing hundreds of pickup trucks from India for Red and White Village Cooperatives without coordination with the DPR.
"Agrinas never mentioned the type and qualifications of the vehicles for Kopdes Merah Putih," said DPR Commission VI member Herman Khaeron at the DPR, MPR, and DPD complex in Jakarta on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
As a working partner of Agrinas, he continued, Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota did presented the budget allocation for the Red and White Village Cooperatives project in a hearing.
In that meeting, he said, Agrinas mentioned that the budget would be allocated for the construction of an outlet, working capital expenditure, and supporting infrastructure, including transportation expenses.
The issue is that the infrastructure spending was not coordinated with the DPR beforehand. Suddenly, said Herman, mass media reports flooded the internet and social media stating that the pickup trucks imported by Agrinas from India had landed in Jakarta.
"This budget is quite significant; it should have been discussed with the DPR first," said the Secretary-General of the Democratic Party.
The news of Agrinas importing pickup trucks was announced by the Indian automotive company, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), on their company's website on February 4, 2026.
M&M announced that it would supply 35,000 units of Scorpio pickups. Six days later, Tata Motors Limited announced plans to export 70,000 pickup units to Indonesia.
At a press conference on February 24, the President Director of PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota, stated that the 4x4 pickup trucks were intended for 70,000 Red and White Village Cooperatives, mainly to transport agricultural produce to the market.
Initially, he claimed, he questioned why Red and White Village Cooperatives needed vehicles. "But after I tried to understand, it turns out that the President intends to connect farmers directly with consumers so that a fair price can be achieved," said Joao.
He explained that the domestic price of 4x4 pickup trucks is quite high, reaching Rp528 million per unit in e-catalogs. Even when using a 4x2 vehicle, the price is relatively high and not in line with farmers' limited income.
Considering this, he said, Agrinas decided to import pickup trucks from India. Joao added that another factor is that the imported vehicles have a carrying capacity of up to 1.2 tons.
