TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi made history after winning the women's doubles event at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open in Washington, United States.
According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Washington on Tuesday, citing ANTARA, Aldila, who paired with New Zealand tennis player Erin Routliffe, defeated Andreja Klepac from Slovenia and Miyu Kato from Japan with a score of 6-4, 6-1 in the final match which took place on Saturday, August 1.
This victory made Aldila the first Indonesian tennis player to win the title in one of the world's elite tournaments.
Indonesian Ambassador to the U.S. Indroyono Soesilo praised the success, considering it proof of Indonesian athletes' ability to compete on the world sporting stage. "Aldila's achievement is truly remarkable and proves that Indonesian athletes are capable of competing and winning titles on the global tennis stage," said Indroyono.
He hopes this success will encourage Aldila to continue improving her achievements while preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "Hopefully, this success will further motivate Aldila to continue improving her performance and look forward to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, bringing honor to Indonesia once again," he said.
Aldila is currently ranked 27th in the world in women's doubles. Throughout the tournament, she competed under the guidance of former Indonesian national tennis player Christopher Rungkat.
The Mubadala DC Open is an ATP 500 and WTA 500 tournament held at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington. It is the only combined ATP and WTA 500 tournament in the world.
Since its first edition in 1969, the tournament has produced several world champions, including Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Andy Roddick, and the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena.
In the women's doubles event, only 16 pairs competed. Aldila and Routliffe were the second seeds.
The tennis player, who was born in Jakarta, began playing tennis at 5 and started his professional career in 2017.
Besides Aldila, Indonesia is also represented by Janice Tjen at the tournament. Janice competes in both singles and doubles and is currently ranked 39th in the world.
Aldila's success is considered a significant momentum for the development of Indonesian women's tennis and strengthens Indonesia's position in international tennis competition.
