TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - MotoGP racer Alex Marquez views Indonesia as one of the largest and most crucial markets for the world's most prestigious motorcycle racing event. He expressed hope that the country could host two or even three series in the future, up from the current single race.
"Our fan base in Indonesia is enormous. It's truly enjoyable to feel the incredible atmosphere created by the fans in Lombok," Alex Marquez said during an interview session in Jakarta on Tuesday, ahead of the Indonesian Grand Prix at the Mandalika Circuit.
Marquez contended that the massive presence of Indonesian fans, both at the track and on social media, provides a compelling argument for MotoGP to consider expanding its presence.
"I think it’s more than necessary to have at least one event in Indonesia, hopefully two or even three, because this is a very significant market for us and MotoGP," he asserted.
Mandalika Grand Prix
The Indonesian MotoGP is scheduled to take place at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit from October 3–5. This year marks the fourth consecutive edition of the race since 2022, holding a unique historical record: no racer has yet secured two victories on the 4.3 km circuit.
So far, the circuit has crowned three distinct champions: Miguel Oliveira (2022), Francesco Bagnaia (2023), and Jorge Martin (2024). Adding to the circuit's unpredictability, only Martin managed to convert his pole position into a race victory; the other two pole-sitters failed to finish at the front.
This season, the battle at Mandalika centers on two key figures: Francesco Bagnaia, who arrives with momentum after winning in Japan, and his brother Marc Marquez, who just secured the 2025 world champion title in Motegi.
Marc Marquez faces a personal challenge, as he still holds the unfortunate record of never finishing a race in Indonesia across the last three seasons. This race presents a crucial opportunity for the newly crowned champion to finally prove himself in front of the fervent local supporters.
