TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tech giant Apple is reportedly likely to debut the long-rumored AirPods with cameras alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September 2026.
According to a report by Gizmochina on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Apple has been working on these AirPods with cameras, under the internal code name B798. Originally slated for a 2026 release, the product has since been changed, with the device now scheduled for a 2027 release.
The source of this information is Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who in his Power On newsletter mentioned that another version, codenamed B790, is more advanced in development.
The product, codenamed B790, has appeared in the second iOS 27 beta app for app developers. Gurman also noted that B790 is indeed on Apple's internal roadmap for a possible 2026 release.
This news contradicts previously circulating information that suggested the AirPods with cameras were being shelved, as previously said by Apple product analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in his 2024 projection.
This projection refers to a product model codenamed B798, which is undergoing more complex development.
Apple often produces multiple versions of the same product simultaneously during its product development process. This allows them to work on products through various development projects in parallel.
If the schedule is right, the new AirPods with in-built cameras could be released alongside the new iPhone lineup in September 2026, in line with Apple's release pattern of pairing major audio product updates with smartphones in the fall.
The camera technology in AirPods isn't expected to be used solely for taking photos or videos. The camera could function as a low-resolution visual sensor to give Siri a better understanding of the user's surroundings.
When the AirPods camera is activated, a small LED indicator might light up to address privacy concerns, a similar approach to the various smart glasses currently on the market.
