TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) recorded that online gambling transactions reached Rp1 trillion during the 2026 World Cup, which ran from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
PPATK identified online gambling deposits tied to the World Cup reaching Rp1.02 trillion. This volume originated from 6 million individual transactions.
"Regarding this activity, PPATK has temporarily suspended transactions in 2,815 accounts with a total balance of Rp325.43 billion," said PPATK Head Ivan Yustiavandana in an official statement on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
According to Ivan, these transactions were dominated by Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). Throughout the first half of 2026, deposits via QRIS reached Rp12.36 trillion, or 56.04 percent of the total deposit amount. This figure came from 198.77 million transactions. Meanwhile, deposits via bank accounts and e-wallets reached Rp9.69 trillion across 27.99 million transactions.
However, Ivan clarified that this trend does not imply QRIS is a flawed instrument or one that should be abandoned. QRIS is a legitimate payment method. "The problem lies in the misuse of merchants, identities, and transaction purposes by online gambling networks," Ivan said.1
Nevertheless, Ivan urged stakeholders to strengthen merchant verification and protocols, closely monitor transaction patterns, and take action against merchants and entities that exploit the payment system.
