TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner last Saturday night was just the latest in a series of security-related events and assassination attempts involving U.S. President Donald Trump since 2016.
Over the past decade, Trump has been the target of assassination plots, alleged foreign-linked conspiracies, and armed security breaches spanning public rallies, his Florida resort, and official ceremonies.
During the annual media gala, Trump and senior White House officials were evacuated after an armed man stormed the lobby and opened fire. The suspect was apprehended at the Washington Hilton and detained; U.S. media have identified him as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that charges will be filed shortly, though it remains unclear if the suspect’s primary intent was to target Trump.
Since 2024, the President has faced a variety of security threats during both his presidency and election campaigns. Here is the chronology of these events as reported by Al Jazeera and Anadolu.
July 2024: Shooting at a Pennsylvania Rally
Trump was injured during a campaign rally in Butler County on July 14, 2024, three months before winning his second term. As he addressed the crowd around 18:15 local time, at least five shots rang out. Trump fell to the ground as Secret Service agents rushed the stage to shield him.
Minutes later, he was assisted to his feet and escorted to his motorcade with blood visible on his right ear and smeared across his face.
The Secret Service shot and killed the suspected shooter within seconds. Before being whisked away, Trump famously clenched his fist and shouted "Fight!" to the crowd.
The FBI later identified the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
September 2024: Second Assassination Attempt
On September 15, an incident occurred at Trump’s West Palm Springs resort in Florida around 14:00 local time. Reports indicate Trump was moving between the fifth and sixth holes of his golf course with his friend and current Middle East-Ukraine envoy, Steve Witkoff, when gunshots were heard, prompting an immediate closure of the course.
Officials stated a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel protruding from the bushes near the perimeter. Officers fired at least four shots toward the position; it remains unclear if the suspect returned fire.
The suspect, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was later apprehended. In February, Routh was sentenced to life in prison for plotting to murder the President.
February 2026: Armed Intruder Killed at Mar-a-Lago
A man carrying a gasoline jerrycan and a rifle was shot dead by Secret Service agents after crashing his vehicle through the security perimeter at the Mar-a-Lago resort.
The President was in Washington at the time. Police identified the attacker as Austin Tucker Martin, a 21-year-old from North Carolina whose motive remains unknown.
Other Threats
September 2025: An off-duty NYPD officer, Melvin Eng, successfully infiltrated Trump's security detail during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. Armed and in tactical gear, Eng posed as part of the presidential team while on sick leave. The breach led to his suspension and an internal investigation.
November 8, 2024: U.S. prosecutors charged Farhad Shakeri, an alleged IRGC asset, with planning the assassination of Trump alongside other contract killings. Shakeri remains at large in Iran.
July 12, 2024: Pakistani national Asif Merchant was arrested for involvement in an Iran-linked plot targeting U.S. political figures, including Trump. He was convicted in March 2026.
September 20, 2020: Dual Canadian-French citizen Pascale Ferrier was arrested after mailing a letter laced with ricin to Trump at the White House. She was sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison.
September 6, 2017: Gregory Lee Leingang stole a forklift in North Dakota with the admitted intent of flipping the presidential limousine. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced.
June 18, 2016 - British national Michael Sandford attempted to seize a police officer’s handgun at a Las Vegas rally to shoot Trump. He was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison.
