Fact Check: Is a 9-Day Global Blackout Starting on July 18?

3 hours ago 14

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of posts on Facebook [archive] and Instagram claim that there will be a global power outage or blackout for nine days starting July 18, 2026. But is there really going to be a global power outage for nine days?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the claim through interviews and investigations into credible sources. The results showed that the narrative is a conspiracy theory. There is no plan for a global power outage.

Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources spokesperson Dwi Anggia emphasized that the government has no such plan and confirmed that the narrative on social media is false. "That (information) is not true," Dwi said when contacted by Tempo on Friday, June 12, 2026.

How Disinformation Spreads

False information about mass blackouts is circulating amid the European energy crisis, particularly in Germany. According to Disinfo.eu, this disinformation is mostly aimed at hindering the transition to renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and electric cars.

The spread of this hoax was fueled by pro-Russian ideological motives and the monetization of clickbait content. The Russo-Ukrainian war and Western Europe's efforts to break its energy dependence on Russia further fueled the narrative. Although experts assured that energy supplies were secure, some parties exploited the uncertainty to fuel the blackout.

The narrative of the nine-day blackout was also linked to Agenda 2030, a conspiracy theory about a new world order and depopulation.

According to Boatos.org, the claim of a global blackout follows classic conspiracy theory patterns: using language that incites panic, lacking evidence, and predicting a disaster on a specific date.

In reality, there has been no official government statement, scientific study, or technical explanation for the July 2026 global blackout. The world's power grid is not integrated into a single system that can be shut down simultaneously, but rather is managed independently by each country or region. A global disruption of this magnitude could only be triggered by an extraordinary cosmic phenomenon, not a coordinated action concealed by scientists or governments.

CONCLUSION

Tempo concludes that the narrative regarding a nine-day power outage or blackout starting July 18, 2026, is false information.
