TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 65,502 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, Anadolu reported on Thursday.
In the past 24 hours alone, hospitals received 83 bodies and 216 injured people, bringing the total number of wounded since the conflict began to 167,376.
“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” the ministry said.
The statement also noted that seven Palestinians were killed and 50 others injured in the past day when Israeli forces opened fire on crowds attempting to obtain humanitarian aid.
This raises the total number of Palestinians killed while seeking aid to 2,538, with 18,581 others wounded since May 27, when the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) took over distribution from hundreds of UN aid centers.
The Israeli army has carried out continuous attacks since March 18, killing 12,939 people and injuring 55,335 in defiance of a January ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement.
Intensified Assault on Gaza City
According to The New Arab, Israel’s latest offensive, launched in August, has focused on northern Gaza, particularly Gaza City, as Israel seeks to establish control of the area. The campaign has displaced nearly one million Palestinians while worsening shortages of food, medicine, and shelter. More than 300 people have died from starvation amid the crisis.
Israeli military sources said 700,000 Palestinians have fled south from Gaza City since late August, while the UN humanitarian agency reported 388,400 displacement movements since mid-August, mostly from Gaza City. Still, hundreds of thousands remain trapped, either unwilling or unable to leave.
Eyewitnesses reported tanks entering densely populated neighborhoods in Tal al-Hawa, surrounding residents in their homes, and positioning near the al-Quds Field Hospital.
“We moved to the western area near the beach, but many families didn't have the time, tanks took them by surprise,” said Thaer, 35, a father from Tal al-Hawa, as quoted by Arab News.
In the central Gaza Strip, Israeli attacks on a house in Al-Zawaida killed 11 people, including women and children, and injured nine others.
Meanwhile, in Khan Younis in the south, airstrikes on the Al-Wadi family home killed four Palestinians, including two women, and left 13 others wounded.
The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza has drawn global attention. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its military campaign in the enclave.
