Australia Forecasts Stronger El Nino Conditions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) stated that the El Nino hot weather phenomenon is currently underway in the tropical Pacific Ocean and could reach very strong levels.

As reported by ANTARA, the BoM said in an update released on Tuesday, June 16, that the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the tropical Pacific Ocean has now entered the El Nino phase.

This phenomenon, triggered by rising sea surface temperatures around the equator, has the potential to impact global weather patterns significantly. "Most models suggest this event is likely to be strong to very strong," the BoM said in the statement.

The BoM explains that the El Nino phenomenon is usually associated with reduced rainfall in winter and spring in Australia, especially in the eastern part of the country, as well as increased daytime temperatures in the southern region.

The previous El Nino event, which began in 2023 and ended in 2024, included the driest three-month period ever recorded in Australia, from August to October 2023.

The BoM stated that forecasts indicate the current El Nino conditions will likely persist into the second half of 2026. However, their impact will be difficult to predict due to global warming.

"The strength of the event doesn't always match the strength of its impact in Australia. A weaker event can have major effects, while a stronger one may not. However, in a warming climate, past patterns are less reliable as a predictor of future impacts," the BoM said.

The BoM also noted that the chances of drier conditions in Australia would increase if a positive Indian Ocean Dipole develops, as indicated by models.
