TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - InJourney Aviation Services or IAS, an airport services company, aims to reduce baggage handling time at Soekarno-Hatta Airport by 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
IAS Integration and Portfolio Director Danny P. Thaharsyah said that his office will operate various types of new GSE with sophisticated technology which will support airport operations in shortening passenger baggage service time. "Our goal is to make passenger baggage service faster and more efficient," Danny said at Terminal I B of Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Previously, baggage service at Soekarno-Hatta Airport was still quite long because it still followed the standard time set by the government (Ministry of Transportation), which was 20 minutes for firstback (baggage that arrived first on the conveyor belt) and 40 minutes for lastback (the last baggage that arrived on the conveyor belt). "That was the standard, to achieve that standard it was still below 50 percent," Danny said.
Currently, the baggage service can reach 80 percent of the total baggage service from each region and has met the 20-minute and 40-minute standards. "So we will continue to pursue the rest, including by adding equipment or GSE," he said.
15-30 Minutes Target
The acceleration of baggage handling time at the airport was once communicated by IAS President Director Dendi Tegar Danianto during the preparations for Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025.
At that time, Dendi said that they targeted passenger baggage handling at Soekarno-Hatta Airport would be tried during the year-end holiday period with a maximum time of 30 minutes. "This is faster than the target set by the Ministry of Transportation, which is 20-40 (minutes)," Dendi told reporters on Friday, December 13, 2024.
This means, Dendi said, that all passengers' baggage will be on the conveyor belt with a maximum handling time of 30 minutes after the plane arrives at the apron. "So the first bag will be on the conveyor in 15 (minutes) and the last bag must be on the conveyor in 30 minutes," Dendi said.
Bringing in 70 Pieces of Equipment
To achieve this goal, IAS has brought in 70 pieces of ground support equipment, or GSE, for Soekarno-Hatta Airport. The GSE, which arrived at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Thursday, January 9, 2025, includes 7 Baggage Towing Tractor units, 12 Conveyor Belt Loader Towable units, 4 High Lift Loader units, and 1 Towing Bar B737/A320 unit.
Dozens of different types of equipment will be operated to support airport services at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, one of which is baggage services. Dendi added that the GSE will continue to be added gradually. "This year 70 units and next year the target is 90 more units," said Dendi.
