Follow Mail Sport's live blog of Tottenham against Bayern Munich as Harry Kane could make a return to face his former club.
Spurs not ready for Champions League football
Tottenham were not terrible but they played like a team who knew they were vastly inferior to their opposition.
Because they are. This side finished 17th in the Premier League last season, while Bayern romped to the Bundesliga title by a margin of 13 points.
Spurs sat deep for much of the game and tried to rely on the pace of Mohammed Kudus and Brennan Johnson to launch meaningful counter-attacks.
When that plan bore no fruit, Spurs tried to play on the front foot, only to be destroyed on the break themselves.
Thursday's match was played with an official UEFA Champions League match ball. But it will have done nothing to make Frank's men feel more comfortable about their return to elite European competition.
'Spurs weren't good enough'
Former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson speaking on SpursPlay:
Bayern were brilliant
As easy as it would be to focus on Tottenham's shortcomings, it must be said that Bayern were brilliant.
That starting front four of Kane, Diaz, Olise and Coman will take some stopping next season, both in Germany and Europe, while their subs were also superb.
Full-time: Bayern 4-0 Spurs
No added time as the ref shows mercy to Spurs.
Thomas Frank's side had kept three clean sheets in their first five friendlies but this was a wake-up call.
How will they respond against PSG next week?
Bayern 4-0 Spurs
This has been a tough night for Spurs and perhaps a glimpse of what is to come ahead of their return to the Champions League.
It is perhaps not a huge surprise though. After all, they did finish 17th in the Premier League last season.
The good news for Thomas Frank is that Spurs will not face many sides this good domestically this season.
The bad news is that his next game is against European champions PSG in the UEFA Super Cup.
GOAL! BAYERN 4-0 Spurs (Kusi-Asare)
How good are these Bayern youngsters?!
Another stunning strike — this time from Jonah Kusi-Asare, who curls a first-time shot into the top corner from the left side of the box.
Vicario had no chance.
That’s now two absolute belters from Kompany’s bench brigade, and Spurs are being taken apart by Bayern’s second string.
Ruthless, stylish, and utterly dominant.
GOAL! BAYERN 3-0 Spurs (Karl)
The Mexican wave is rudely interrupted by a screamer scored by 17-year-old Lennart Karl.
Luis Diaz led the attack before David Daiber teed up Karl and he curled past Vicario spectacularly from 20 yards.
Vicario is not happy with his defenders but that was a top finish.
Bayern 2-0 Spurs
Spurs are enjoying a sustained period of possession.
But the Bayern fans don't care. They are enjoying a Mexican wave.
How very pre-season.
Bayern 2-0 Spurs
As expected, it's a near full reset from Vincent Kompany. Nine of Bayern's starting XI have been replaced, with only Manuel Neuer and Luis Diaz staying on.
Off go:
Kane, Kimmich, Goretzka, Coman, Olise, Laimer, Stanisic, Tah, and Upamecano.
On come:
Kusi-Asare, Bischof, Daiber, Karl, Wanner, Boey, Guerreiro, Kim Min-jae, and Kiala.
That's Kane's night done — a goal, a missed penalty, a hug for the Spurs keeper, and a warm reception from both sets of fans.
Now it's up to Bayern's second string to finish the job.
Meanwhile, Tel is on for Richarlison.
Bayern 2-0 Spurs
A lovely moment in Munich as Guglielmo Vicario pulls off a superb save to deny Harry Kane.
Kane's reaction? A grin and a hug for the Spurs keeper. That looks like Kane's final involvement of the evening, with Bayern preparing a wave of substitutions.
It’s wholesale changes from Vincent Kompany — looks like half the team is coming off.
We’ll confirm the ins and outs as soon as we have them.
Bayern 2-0 Spurs
Double change for Spurs
Moments after falling 2-0 behind, Thomas Frank makes two subs.
Wilson Odobert replaces Brennan Johnson out wide, while Ben Davies comes on for Djed Spence, who was caught out in the build-up to Bayern's second.
Spence looked annoyed as he takes his place on the bench.
GOAL! BAYERN 2-0 Spurs (Coman)
What a goal! Tottenham have been living dangerously — and finally they pay the price.
Konrad Laimer catches Djed Spence napping near the touchline, pinching the ball high up the pitch before feeding Kingsley Coman.
Coman cuts inside onto his left foot and curls a gorgeous finish into the far corner from the edge of the box.
No chance for Vicario, and no real complaints from Spurs.
In truth, Bayern could already be three or four up.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
This is only a friendly but Romero is perhaps lucky to still be on the pitch.
Bayern drive at Spurs with a flowing counter-attack and Kane is at the heart of it.
But Romero flattens Kane after the ball has gone and the referee lets him off, possibly because the ball went to a Bayern team-mate.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
Olise hops in a time machine and turns into prime Arjen Robben, before cutting inside onto his left foot and curling a wicked shot goalwards.
Vicario does brilliantly to palm the ball away for a corner, from which Spurs counter-attack - but it comes to nothing.
CLOSE! Bayern 1-0 Spurs
What a miss by Olise!
Great work by Kane, who does well to stay onside before firing in a low cross for Olise, who misses the target from three yards.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
A bright start to the second period by Spurs, with the overlapping Spence looking dangerous down the left.
Meanwhile, Lucas Bergvall appears to be playing as the most advanced member of Tottenham's midfield three.
With James Maddison likely out for most of the season, perhaps the young Swede might emerge as a candidate to fill the No 10 void?
Back underway
The second half is underway and Spurs have made one change, with Lucas Bergvall coming on for Joao Palhinha.
No Bayern subs yet.
Bayern dominant... but wasteful
The numbers at the break paint a clear picture. Bayern have bossed the ball, enjoying 68.2% possession and taking 15 shots to Tottenham’s two.
Yet the scoreline remains just 1-0 – despite Harry Kane skying a penalty and Spurs creating a decent chance through Richarlison late in the half.
FIRST HALF STATS
Possession: Bayern 68.2% | Spurs 31.8%
Shot attempts: Bayern 15 | Spurs 2
Shots on target: 2 each
Corners: Bayern 3 | Spurs 0
Fouls: Bayern 7 | Spurs 5
Yellow cards: Bayern 0 | Spurs 1 (Romero)
Romero right to complain?
We are being treated to multiple replays of the Bayern penalty incident at half-time and it appears as though Joao Palhinha may not have touched Josip Stanisic at all.
That, coupled with the missed offside for Kane, was likely what Romero was complaining about moments ago.
Half-time: Bayern 1-0 Spurs
Bayern end the first half on the attack and are only denied a second goal by a brilliant goal-line clearance from Micky van de Ven - although nowhere near his best.
1-0 to Bayern is a fair scoreline at the break. Kane's goal was offside but he also freakishly skied a penalty, while the home side have bossed the possession.
Romero is not happy with the referee and is chewing his ear as the players leave the pitch.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
The referee does have cards after all! And no surprise that Romero is the first recipient.
This feels a bit harsh, mind. Romero is penalised for a bit of a shove on Kane, 25 yards from goal.
Kane didn't go down but the referee felt it was worthy of a free-kick. Romero disagreed - quite loudly - and his reaction appears to be what earned his booking.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
A decent spell for Spurs.
Richarlison forces a good save out of Neuer. Moments later, Sarr bursts into the box - only to be muscled off the ball.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
Laimer pulls back Kudus to cynically stop a counter-attack and Spurs get a free-kick in their own half.
This ref doesn't fancy showing yellow cards today though...
Great news for Romero!
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
Olise skins Van de Ven with a brilliant piece of skill that eventually results in a Bayern corner.
The corner is taken short, before being fizzed in and Van de Ven attones by clearing with a crucial header to deny Kane a simple chance.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
A first save of the match for Guglielmo Vicario as the Spurs stopper does well to get down low and hold onto an effort from Leon Goretzka.
Goretzka beat Bentancur to a high ball with an athletic first touch, before sweetly connecting with a shot from 20 yards.
Spurs are still yet to threaten at the other end.
Bayern 1-0 Spurs
Spurs enjoy their best spell of possession but the turnover sparks a brilliant Bayern counter-attack.
It ends with Romero crashing into Luis Diaz inside the penalty area, but the referee calls it firm but fair.
Diaz didn't complain too much in fairness.
KANE MISSES BY A MILE!
That is probably the worst penalty of Harry Kane's career!
He sends the ball to moon after a slight slip.
A let-off for Spurs. Still only 1-0.
PENALTY!
Tottenham's dreams of winning the Telekom Cup are hanging by a thread.
Joao Palhinha, playing for Spurs against his parent club, has just given away a penalty by fouling Stanisic.
Kane will take it...
GOAL! BAYERN 1-0 Spurs (Kane)
Harry Kane scores against his former club.
It's a lovely two-touch finish, although replays show he was clearly offside.
No VAR in the Telekom Cup, so the goal stands.
Muted celebrations from Kane.
Bayern 0-0 Spurs
What did I say about Romero? Well, it did not take him long to send Kane to the ground.
Romero just charged 10 yards towards Kane, who had controlled the ball with his back to goal midway inside the attacking half, and the Spurs captain chopped into him from behind.
Not quite enough for a booking. But enough to let Kane know he's not going to have a relaxing evening against his old club.
Bayern 0-0 Spurs
Tottenham's best moment of the match so far comes courtesy of Djed Spence, who drives forward from left back.
Spence beats two players on a 50-yard dribble before Coman fouls him.
Spurs opt to keep the ball from the set-piece, rather than pumping it into the Bayern box - a sign they want to calm things down.
Bayern 0-0 Spurs
Kudus and Richarlison combine to foul Olise just outside the penalty area.
Kane stands over the free-kick but Olise strikes it and sends the game's first shot just wide.
Bayern 0-0 Spurs
Brennan Johnson is operating from the left wing, with Kudus on the right.
Neither has seen much of the ball yet though. Bayern have made the more composed start.
KICK-OFF
Former Bayern man Mathys Tel was just presented with some flowers by the German club's sporting director.
Tel is now sitting with them on the bench as Bayern kick off. We are underway in the Munich sunshine!
Here come the players
The players enter the Allianz Arena to a wall of noise.
This is an incredible atmosphere for a friendly.
A full house too. Let's hope the fans are well entertained over the next 90 minutes...
Romero takes the armband
With Son gone, Cristian Romero has taken over as Tottenham captain — and his first big task in the role? Marking Harry Kane.
The same Harry Kane who left Spurs in search of silverware, only to watch them lift the Europa League without him.
Romero has never been one for subtlety, and you wouldn’t bet against him leaving a little reminder for his old team-mate.
The post-Son era begins
For the first time in a decade, Tottenham take to the pitch without Son Heung-min on the books.
Son's emotional departure was confirmed by the club yesterday, bringing an end to one of the most beloved chapters in Spurs' modern history. The South Korean forward scored 173 goals in 454 appearances, won a Golden Boot, collected a Puskas Award, captained the team, and — at long last — lifted a trophy, hoisting the Europa League in Bilbao back in May.
His farewell video, titled 'Dear Spurs fans', showed the same warmth and humility that defined his decade in north London. 'You were always in the frame,' he said, referencing his trademark celebration — and those words will stay with supporters for a long time.
From the first official goal at the new stadium to tears at his press conference in Seoul, Son always wore his heart on his sleeve. And now, after ten years of magic, he begins a new adventure in Los Angeles.
Back here in Munich, Thomas Frank's side are starting theirs too. With Kudus and Palhinha in the XI, this is not just another friendly. It's a symbolic night.
The post-Son era starts now.
Maddison blow casts long shadow
One man missing tonight is James Maddison.
The England midfielder suffered an ACL injury against Newcastle and could miss the entire season.
It's a cruel blow for both player and club – and leaves a big creative void in Spurs' midfield.
Judging by the Spurs team sheet, it will either be Bentancur in the No 10 position, or Frank's men will play a more compact 4-3-3, focussing on attacking from out wide.
Bayern 'up for it', says Kompany
'We're up for it,' said Vincent Kompany ahead of tonight’s clash.
'We don't have much time, but we want to be physically ready for the first games.'
Sounds like we should be expecting plenty of urgency from the home team.
Kompany has just over a week left to prepare for Bayern's first competitive match – the German Super Cup against Stuttgart.
So don't expect a gentle friendly here. The intensity will be up, especially in front of a packed home crowd at the Allianz.
Tottenham eyeing pre-season TREBLE of trophies
Harry Kane left Tottenham to win trophies – and finally got his hands on the Bundesliga title with Bayern, while Spurs won the Europa League without him.
Tonight, his old club could move one step closer to a pre-season treble!
Having already lifted the Herbalgy Trophy in Hong Kong by beating Arsenal, Spurs now have a shot at the Telekom Cup in Munich. Win tonight, and it’s two from two – with the UEFA Super Cup against PSG to come next week.
Alright, none of these are exactly the Champions League... but for a club that went 17 years without a trophy, they all count for something.
Diaz, Olise and Kane lead Bayern’s attack
It’s a Premier League reunion in Munich!
Luis Diaz starts just over a week after his switch from Liverpool, lining up in an attack that includes Michael Olise and Harry Kane.
That trio alone brings pace, power, trickery – and a lot of Premier League spice.
SPURS TEAM NEWS: Palhinha starts against parent club
Joao Palhinha goes straight into the Spurs starting XI – and faces Bayern just days after joining from them on loan.
Mohammed Kudus also starts for Thomas Frank’s side, but there’s no Dominic Solanke in the matchday squad. Mathys Tel – who made his Tottenham move permanent earlier this summer – is on the bench.
Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero (c), Van de Ven, Spence; Bentancur, Palhinha, Sarr; Johnson, Richarlison, Kudus.
Subs: Kinsky, Austin, Davies, Danso, Vuskovic, Gray, Bissouma, Bergvall, Odobert, Tel.
BAYERN TEAM NEWS: Kane starts against Spurs
Harry Kane leads the line for Bayern Munich against his former club – nearly two years after leaving north London for Bavaria.
He’s flanked by former Premier League stars Luis Diaz and Michael Olise in a strong Bayern XI. Joshua Kimmich also starts, while Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies are still absent.
Bayern XI: Neuer; Kimmich, Upamecano, Tah, Stanisic; Goretzka, Laimer; Olise, Coman, Diaz; Kane.
Subs: Ulreich, Urbig, Kim, Bischof, Guerreiro, Boey, Wanner, Kiala, Mike, Chavez, Kusi-Asare, Karl, Santos, Dalpiaz.
Good evening
The Allianz Arena hosts a high-profile pre-season showdown this evening as Bayern Munich welcome Tottenham Hotspur for the Telekom Cup.
It’s more than just another friendly – there’s silverware on the line, fitness to build, and fresh signings to showcase.
For Bayern, it’s their second warm-up under Vincent Kompany, while Thomas Frank’s Spurs wrap up their summer preparations before next week’s UEFA Super Cup against PSG.
Kick-off is at 5.30pm BST – and we’ll have all the build-up, live action and reaction right here.
