TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of potential light, moderate, and heavy rain, possibly accompanied by lightning and strong winds, in several major cities across Indonesia on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

As quoted from the official BMKG website in Jakarta, forecaster Selly Brilian explained that the convergence zone generally extends across the waters west of North Sumatra, the waters west of Bengkulu, the Strait of Malacca, Jambi, South Sumatra, the waters north of Banten, the Java Sea, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, the Flores Sea, the east coast of Central Sulawesi, the Maluku Sea, Gorontalo, the Sulawesi Sea, North Sulawesi, the Pacific Ocean north of Southwest Papua, and the Arafura Sea.

These conditions can increase the potential for rain cloud growth along the convergence or confluence areas.

The weather forecast today, thus, expects moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds in Padang.

Meanwhile, several other major cities will experience light to moderate rain, including Medan, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Bengkulu, Pontianak, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Kendari, Palu, Sorong, Jayapura, and Jayawijaya.

BMKG also forecasts cloudy weather in Banda Aceh, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Jakarta, Serang, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Palangkaraya, Samarinda, Banjarmasin, Denpasar, Kupang, Makassar, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, Manokwari, and Merauke.
