TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecasted local rains across Indonesia at the beginning of October 2025, with certain regions at risk of extreme weather. These conditions may also heighten the threat of hydrometeorological disasters.
BMKG Public Meteorology Director Andri Ramdhani explained that Indonesia is currently transitioning from the dry season to the rainy season.
“During this period, rain typically occurs from the afternoon into the evening, following warm and sunny mornings,” Andri told Tempo on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
He noted that rains in this transition phase are generally uneven, with moderate to heavy intensity, short duration, and localized impact. Such conditions can also bring lightning, strong winds, and occasionally hail.
According to BMKG projections, the peak of the rainy season will hit most of Sumatra and Kalimantan in November-December 2025, while Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua are expected to see their heaviest rains in January-February 2026.
For the upcoming week, rapid cloud development may increase the likelihood of extreme weather in several regions. Between October 1-3, most areas will experience partly cloudy skies or light rain, but brief heavy showers accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and hail are possible.
Heavy to very heavy rain alerts have been issued for Aceh, North Sumatra, Banten, and West Java. Early warnings also apply to eastern regions, including Maluku, the Papua Mountains, and South Papua.
From October 4-7, weather conditions are expected to remain partly cloudy to light rain, with localized short bursts of heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, and hail still possible.
Heavy rain warnings will continue for West Papua, the Papua Mountains, and South Papua.
