TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported another earthquake striking the Mindanao region in the Philippines on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 01:57 p.m. Jakarta time. The inland quake, with a magnitude of 5.3, originated approximately 230 kilometers northwest of Tahuna, the Sangihe Islands.

Referring to the BMKG's written statement on Thursday afternoon, the earthquake's epicenter was recorded at a depth of 53 kilometers. The Indonesian agency reported that the shallow earthquake was triggered by subduction activity.

Analysis of the source mechanism indicates that the earthquake had an oblique thrust movement. The shaking intensity map shows that the tremors from the M5.3 earthquake were felt at an intensity of III MMI in the Marore Islands, the Sangihe Islands; Miangas, the Talaud Islands; and Kendahe, the Sangihe Islands.

The BMKG stated that there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake, and there is no tsunami risk triggered by the tremor.

The recent shaking is part of the aftershock activities after the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines on June 8. As of Thursday afternoon at 02:00 p.m. Jakarta time, BMKG's analysis recorded 499 aftershocks, the strongest with a magnitude of 6.7.
