TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 shook Nabire in Central Papua on Friday morning, October 3, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded that the earthquake occurred at 03:45 a.m. local time.
BMKG stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was on land, 66 kilometers southwest of Waropen, at a depth of 43 kilometers.
The earthquake was most strongly felt in Nabire, at a scale of IV-V MMI, meaning the tremors were felt by everyone indoors.
The earthquake not only made windows and doors rattle, but it also caused pottery to break and larger items to appear to shake.
There has been no further explanation from BMKG regarding the cause of the earthquake. However, based on information uploaded to their social media account, BMKG revealed that there were at least two aftershocks from the same region at 06:02 a.m., 06:12 a.m., and 06:37 a.m. with weaker magnitudes.
Nabire was recently hit by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. However, the destructive tremor at scale V MMI that occurred on September 19 had its epicenter within the Nabire region.
At that time, BMKG mentioned that it was triggered by an the Weyland thrust fault activity. A series of aftershocks occurred until September 27.
