TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said a combination of atmospheric dynamics is expected to trigger significant weather across parts of the country on Friday, prompting calls for heightened preparedness for potential heavy to very heavy rainfall in several regions.
BMKG forecaster Lintang Alya said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Friday that the areas at risk include Aceh, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Maluku, Central Papua, and Highland Papua.
For western Indonesia, she said residents should remain alert to the potential for thunderstorms in Padang in West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, and Pontianak in West Kalimantan. She also highlighted the possibility of moderate rainfall in Palembang in South Sumatra and Serang in Banten.
In addition, she said light rain is expected in Banda Aceh, Medan in North Sumatra, Pekanbaru in Riau, Tanjung Pinang in the Riau Islands, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang in the Bangka Belitung Islands, Jakarta, Bandung in West Java, Semarang in Central Java, Yogyakarta, Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, Palangka Raya in Central Kalimantan, Samarinda in East Kalimantan, and Tanjung Selor in North Kalimantan.
She added that hazy conditions are likely in Surabaya in East Java.
“For eastern Indonesia, there is potential for thunderstorms in Ternate in North Maluku and Ambon in Maluku,” Lintang said.
Moderate rainfall is also expected in Mamuju in West Sulawesi. Meanwhile, light rain is forecast in Denpasar in Bali, Mataram in West Nusa Tenggara, Makassar in South Sulawesi, Kendari in Southeast Sulawesi, Palu in Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Manado in North Sulawesi, and across Papua, while cloudy conditions are expected in Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara.
