TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rescuers continue searching for victims still trapped under the rubble of Al-Khoziny Islamic boarding school building in Sidoarjo, East Java. As of Friday, October 3, at 11:05 p.m. local time, the joint search and rescue (SAR) team evacuated 8 bodies at the scene.
The Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said a total of 167 people were affected by the building collapse as of late Friday.
"Out of this number, 118 people have been found, while we continue to search for 49 others," said Abdul in a written statement on Saturday, October 4, 2025.
He detailed that out of the 118 found, 103 were declared safe but needing medical treatment; 1 individual has returned home after being declared not requiring medical treatment; and 14 individuals have been confirmed deceased.
Out of the 103 confirmed safe, he said 14 are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, while the remaining 89 have been allowed to return home.
"This number referred to the boarding school's attendance list," explained Abdul.
The four-story building owned by Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo previously collapsed on September 29, allegedly due to construction failure. According to the attendance data at that time, there were 91 victims believed to be buried under the building's rubble.
Abdul said the changes in data were caused by various factors, such as the presence of individuals who were actually safe or not at the scene of the incident when it occurred, but did not report themselves.
Furthermore, since Thursday, October 2, the evacuation process has been designated to evacuate deceased victims. The Head of BNPB, Lieutenant General Suharyanto, said heavy equipment has been deployed as there were no longer any signs of survivors.
He mentioned that the deployment was carried out based on assessments and agreements from the victims' families.
"There are no longer any signs of life. The joint SAR team has decided to move to the next phase, which is to evacuate the deceased victims using heavy equipment," said Suharyanto in a written statement on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
