TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, took place in Theresienwiese in Munich, Germany, and closed on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The closure was prompted by a bomb threat believed to be linked to the explosion of a residential building in Lerchenau, north of the city.
According to Euronews, the explosion in Lerchenau resulted in the death of at least one person. The police stated that the building was intentionally set on fire due to a domestic dispute. It is not yet clear whether the deceased victim was the suspect or someone else. Another person, who is not considered a threat to the public, is still missing.
A large-scale operation by the police and fire brigade commenced in the early hours after the fire was reported. According to several German media reports, gunfire and explosions were heard. The police admitted to finding a booby trap inside the building. Special forces have been deployed to defuse it.
Threat Via Letter
Officials discovered the bomb threat at Oktoberfest in a letter from the suspected perpetrator. Authorities searched the beer festival area to look for other explosive devices and instructed workers to leave the area.
"Due to an unspecified bomb threat related to the operation in northern Munich, the festival grounds at Theresienwiese will remain closed for the time being until 17:00," Munich police wrote on X. The Oktoberfest website provided the same information.
This year's Oktoberfest started on September 20 and ended on October 5. The world's largest beer festival is held annually. Last year, Oktoberfest attracted 6.7 million visitors. The festival in Munich was last closed in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
History of Oktoberfest
For over two centuries, the festival has attracted millions of visitors from around the world who seek to experience Bavarian traditions, enjoy quality beer, and revel in the festive atmosphere.
The first Oktoberfest was held on October 12, 1810, to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig (who later became King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. As part of the celebration, all Munich residents were invited to partake in the open field outside the city gates. The field was then named Theresienwiese, or locally known as "Wiesn," in honor of the princess.
The main event at the first Oktoberfest was not drinking beer as it is known today, but rather a horse race. The horse race became so popular that the tradition continued in the following years. In 1819, the leaders of Munich decided to make Oktoberfest an annual event. Since then, the festival has continued to evolve, although it was interrupted several times due to war and the cholera epidemic.
