Cambodia Says Thailand Continues Attacks Despite Trump's Call

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cambodia has accused Thailand of continuing air strikes on its territory just hours after United States President Donald Trump said Bangkok and Phnom Penh had agreed to halt the fighting along their border.

In a statement posted on social media on Saturday, December 13, 2025, Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense said the Thai military deployed two F-16 fighter jets to drop seven bombs on multiple targets inside Cambodian territory. The statement was cited by Al Jazeera.

Thai forces have not stopped the bombing yet and are still continuing the bombing,” the ministry said.

The accusation came only hours after Trump announced that the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to stop hostilities starting Friday night.

I had a very good conversation this morning with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, concerning the very unfortunate reawakening of their long-running War,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social, as reported by CBS News.

They have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me, and them, with the help of the Great Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim,” Trump added.

He said both countries were “ready for peace and continued trade with the United States.”

The renewed violence has threatened a ceasefire facilitated earlier this year under Malaysian mediation, which Trump attended during a meeting in October.

The conflict, rooted in long-standing territorial disputes, is among several regional conflicts Trump has claimed to have helped resolve.

Border Clashes Continue

The armed clashes between Thailand and Cambodia entered their fifth day on Friday, December 12. According to Al Jazeera, citing The Khmer Times, Thai forces were suspected of launching fresh attacks early Friday in three Cambodian provinces.

Reports said gunfire was heard in Ta Moan, Ta Kra Bei, and Thmar Daun in Oddar Meanchey Province, while artillery shelling struck Phnom Khaing and An Ses in Preah Vihear. Attacks were also reported in Prey Chan and Boeung Trakuan in Banteay Meanchey.

While no new casualties were reported, at least 20 people have been killed and nearly 200 injured since fighting resumed on Monday. Around 600,000 civilians on both sides of the border have been displaced following the collapse of the ceasefire brokered by Trump last October.

Mutual Accusations

Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense has rejected Thai military claims that Phnom Penh used foreign mercenaries to operate suicide drones.

The Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia would like to reject propaganda disseminated on the Thai 2nd Army Area Facebook page, which accused Cambodia of using foreigners to help launch FPV [first person view] drones in the Cambodian-Thai border conflict,” the ministry said in a Facebook statement. It also denied Thai media reports that Cambodia was preparing to deploy Chinese-made PHL-03 missile systems.

Cambodia demands the Thai side to deliberately stop spreading false news in order to divert attention to its violations of international law by painting Cambodia as a pretext to use more violent weapons on Cambodia,” the statement said.

According to U.S. military data, the PHL-03 system is capable of firing rockets up to 130 kilometers—far beyond the range of Cambodia’s BM-21 launchers.

Both sides have blamed each other for reigniting the conflict, which centers on an 800-kilometer disputed border and competing claims over several ancient temple complexes.

Cambodia has accused Thailand of targeting civilian areas, describing recent attacks as “brutal armed aggression.” Thailand, meanwhile, said Cambodian forces violated its territory, prompting it to act in self-defense.
