Covid-19 Spike Prompts Emergency Response from Singaporean Companies

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The increasing number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore has prompted several companies have take action to address the labor shortage and ensure customer safety. As reported by Channel News Asia, the emergency measures include hiring more part-time workers, involving sanitation services, and providing protective equipment for staff and customers.

The Singapore health authorities said on Tuesday, May 13, that the estimated number of Covid-19 cases had risen to 14,200 from April 27 to May 3, 2025. The number of coronavirus cases surged from 11,100 cases compared to the previous week.

With more people falling ill, businesses such as restaurants and transportation companies said they are trying to ensure an adequate workforce supply for operational needs. A seafood restaurant reported that two chefs fell ill due to Covid-19. As a result, the restaurant faced a staff shortage ahead of the busy holiday period last week.

The House of Seafood, located in Punggol, is attempting to recruit experienced part-time cooks to help handle the influx of customers. The restaurant is struggling to address the staff shortage.

Meanwhile, transportation companies such as SG Bus Charter Travel & Tours have also ramped up sanitation efforts. The company ensures that its drivers wear protective gear.

Director Dinesh Dhillon said the company has experience operating services during the pandemic, which began in 2020. “We were actually involved in the transportation of people coming back from overseas, going for quarantine,” he said. He recalled that, in addition to other protective equipment, the drivers had to wear face shields and gloves.

Dinesh added that their drivers wear N95 masks, a practice maintained since the pandemic. He said that N95 masks are more than sufficient for the current situation. For now, the company does not intend to install air purifiers in the buses.
