TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The England national team have lost right-back Tino Livramento ahead of their opening Group C match at the 2026 World Cup against Croatia on Thursday, June 18. Head coach Thomas Tuchel has called up Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah to replace the injured Newcastle United player.
Livramento sustained an injury during England’s training session in Kansas, United States, on Sunday, June 14. The setback has forced him to cut short his tournament campaign and miss the opening match against Croatia, scheduled for Wednesday, June 17.
The Football Association (FA) announced Chalobah’s call-up on Monday, June 15. In an official statement, the FA said the Chelsea defender would join the England squad at the team’s main training camp in Kansas before departing for the Croatia match.
The FA explained that player replacements are still permitted under FIFA regulations. “Squad changes can be made up to 24 hours before the team’s first match in the tournament,” the FA said.
According to ESPN, Livramento is expected to be sidelined for around six weeks because of the injury. The situation has forced Tuchel to find a replacement at right-back ahead of England’s opening fixture.
Before suffering the injury, Livramento appeared as a substitute when England defeated New Zealand 1-0. However, the 23-year-old was not used in the second match against Costa Rica in Florida.
Chalobah’s selection is notable because Tuchel chose him ahead of several more experienced options, including Fikayo Tomori, Harry Maguire, Lewis Hall, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The 26-year-old defender enjoyed a consistent season with Chelsea in 2025-26. According to Transfermarkt, Chalobah made 34 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals and accumulating 2,782 minutes on the pitch.
Chalobah could serve as backup to John Stones and Marc Guehi in England’s defense during the 2026 World Cup. The call-up also gives him an opportunity to return to the national team after missing out on selection in several recent matches.
He made his England debut on June 11, 2025, against Senegal. Chalobah played the full 90 minutes in that match, although England suffered a 3-1 defeat. His inclusion provides Tuchel with an additional defensive option ahead of the crucial opening game against Croatia at the 2026 World Cup.
