TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that there were no Indonesian citizens on the Global Sumud Flotilla ship intercepted by Israeli forces on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

"We can confirm that according to our records, there were no Indonesian citizens on board the ship," said the Second Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela, to Tempo on Thursday, October 2, 2025. He added that the ministry continues to monitor the situation and is prepared to provide consular assistance. "The Foreign Ministry, through the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI), is continuously monitoring and providing any necessary assistance, including consular assistance," he said.

On the same day, Judha Nugraha, the Director of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Abroad at the Foreign Ministry, mentioned that the government is coordinating with Indonesian participants who joined the voyage. "The Foreign Ministry continues to monitor and maintain communication with Indonesian citizens who joined the Global Sumud Flotilla voyage," said Judha to Tempo.

He explained that one participant, Muhammad Husein from the Indonesia Global Peace Convoy (IGPC), is currently en route to Cyprus. "Based on communication as of October 2, 2025, he is in good condition," he said. According to Judha, the Indonesian Embassy in Rome, which oversees the work area of Cyprus, has deployed officers to assist if needed.

In addition to Husein, two other individuals who were part of the flotilla until the final departure were Muhammad Fatur Rohman from the Aqsa Working Group (AWG) and actress-cum-activist Wanda Hamidah.

Israeli Forces Interception

According to a report by Euronews, Israeli forces intercepted 21 out of 43 Global Sumud Flotilla ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel stated that all activists on board, including Greta Thunberg, are safe and will be deported in the coming days.

The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, stated that he has requested Israel not to use violence. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also condemned the interception, calling it an act of terrorism and a serious violation of international law.

The flotilla fleet was known to have sailed in international waters north of Egypt before entering a zone often used as a boundary by Israel. Activists referred to it as a "danger zone." In the early hours of October 1, the Israeli navy sent a radio message for the ships to change course as they were approaching an active combat zone.

Towards the evening, dozens of Israeli warships surrounded the fleet. Live broadcasts from most of the ships were then cut off. Before throwing their communication devices into the sea, some activists managed to broadcast moments when their ships were approached by Israeli forces.

The spokesperson for the Global Sumud Flotilla, Saif Abukeshek, told Al Jazeera that more than 200 people from 37 countries were on board, including 30 participants from Spain, 22 from Italy, 21 from Turkey, and 12 from Malaysia.
