TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – France recorded an estimated 2,025 excess deaths during the severe heatwave that swept across the country in late June, according to preliminary data released by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) and reported by BFM TV on Friday, July 3.
The figures show that nearly 9,000 deaths were digitally registered in France between June 22 and June 28, coinciding with the peak of the heatwave that affected most parts of the country.
French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist said the figures remain provisional because electronic death certificates do not capture every death recorded nationwide.
She cautioned that the current data should be interpreted carefully and may underestimate the full impact of the heatwave.
The excess mortality estimate reflects the increase in deaths recorded during the extreme weather event compared with expected mortality levels.
Large parts of Europe experienced record-breaking temperatures in late June, prompting health warnings, wildfire risks, and disruptions across several countries. France was among the hardest-hit nations, with authorities urging residents to limit outdoor activities and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
