Germany Proposes EU Peacekeeping Mission to Replace UNIFIL in Lebanon

5 hours ago 17

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced on Friday that his country has proposed establishing a European Union peacekeeping mission in Lebanon after the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) ends.

At the end of June, the German parliament approved extending the country's military participation in the UNIFIL mission until December 31, 2026. After that, the operational tasks of the mission will be terminated.

"We should examine in the EU whether we can ensure that no security vacuum arises with a European mandate following the UNIFIL mission," Wadephul said in an interview with the RND media group, as quoted by ANTARA.

According to Wadephul, Lebanon is currently starting to show signs of stabilization. He said that, as part of Europe, Germany must "do everything it can to ensure that the process continues to move in a positive direction."

Wadephul said the EU mission would help create conditions that would allow Israeli armed forces to withdraw from Lebanon and prevent Hezbollah from re-establishing its positions.

On April 24, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas stated that the EU was considering sending its own mission to southern Lebanon after UNIFIL completes its mandate.

At the end of August 2025, the UN Security Council extended UNIFIL's mandate until 31 December 2026. After that, the mission will begin a one-year phased withdrawal process.

Currently, the UNIFIL peacekeeping contingent consists of more than 10,000 personnel from 48 countries.
