TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Activists from Global Sumud Flotilla have been on an indefinite hunger strike since being detained and abducted by Israeli forces from international waters, as revealed by the International Committee to Break the Siege of Gaza on Friday, as reported by Anadolu and cited by Antara.
In a statement, the committee stated that several activists detained on the attacked fleet in international waters “announced that they have entered an open-ended hunger strike from the moment of their detention.”
The Israeli navy attacked and seized almost all of the 44 humanitarian flotilla vessels on Thursday and detained more than 470 activists from over 50 countries.
The flotilla aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and break the Israeli blockade on the region.
Israel has maintained a naval blockade in Gaza, home to nearly 2.4 million people, for almost 18 years.
Since October 2023, Israeli bombings have killed over 66,200 Palestinian residents, mostly women and children.
UN bodies and human rights groups have repeatedly warned that Gaza is becoming uninhabitable as hunger and diseases spread rapidly.
