TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government is building temporary housing for the people affected by flash floods and landslides in the Palembayan Subdistrict, Agam Regency, West Sumatra. These temporary housing units will be built in the form of barracks.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced that there will be at least three points for the temporary housing units in Palembayan. "With the main location at the Soccer Field of SDN (elementary school) 05 Kayu Pasak, Nagari Salareh Aia Timur," said the Head of Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, in his statement on Thursday, November 18, 2025.

In that location, Muhari explained that the temporary housing units will be built on 5,632 square meters of land according to a barracks concept. "Each housing unit is 33 square meters, with a total of 117 housing units consisting of 21 units of type 5 barracks and 3 units of type 4 barracks," said Muhari.

This area is also equipped with one guard post. In addition, there will be one health service facility to support the basic needs of the affected residents.

However, the number of temporary housing units at the main location is still insufficient. Therefore, the government is preparing two additional locations in the Palembayan Subdistrict, located at the Soccer Field of Padang Sibabaju, Jorong Kayu Pasak Timur, Nagari Salareh Aia Timur, and the Soccer Field of Jajaran Tantaman, Nagari Tigo Koto Silungkang.

The construction of temporary housing units is under the command of Dandim (military district commander) 0304/Agam, with the support of other institutions. "BNPB targets that these temporary housing units can be inhabited before January 2, 2026," said Muhari.

He hoped the temporary shelters would be completed soon so the refugees occupying SDN 05 Kayu Pasak could move out. "This step is important considering that the teaching and learning activities will resume on January 5, 2026, coinciding with the beginning of the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year," said Muhari.

BNPB noted an increase in the number of casualties from the disaster in Sumatra on Thursday, December 18, 2025. Flash floods and landslides have struck three provinces on the island of Sumatra, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Based on data as of December 18 at 06:20, the death toll from the three affected provinces reached 1,059 people. The number of casualties increased by nine people from the previous day's data collected by BNPB.

BNPB also recorded 147,236 damaged houses as a result of the floods and landslides. Thousands of public facilities, including schools, bridges, health facilities, and places of worship scattered in the three provinces, have also suffered damage after being hit by floods and landslides.

President Prabowo Subianto stated that the government will immediately build temporary and permanent housing for the victims of the Sumatra disaster. He received a report from the Minister of Housing and Settlement Area (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, that 2,000 houses will be built starting on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

"Possibly, these houses can immediately become permanent residences," he said during a plenary cabinet session at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, on Monday, December 15, 2025.
