TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A male hiker fell to his death from 5,500 meters height while climbing a mountain in Sichuan, China. He fell after reportedly untying his safety rope while trying to take pictures.

The man, surname Hong, passed away on September 25 while climbing Nama Peak in Sichuan. A video circulating online shows him falling from the mountainside.

According to Chinese media, Red Star News as cited by CNA, the man in his 30s untied his safety rope to take pictures. While trying to stand up, he tripped over his crampons and fell.

As reported by News.com.au, Hong, who was part of a group of hikers, slipped near a cliff after reportedly untying his safety rope to take a selfie at the snowy mountaintop.

Eyewitnesses said he did not use an ice axe and was unable to regain control as he fell 200 meters over the snow, disappearing from view as his companions watched helplessly.

A video recording shows the man in red mountain climbing attire losing his foothold and sliding down the slope while his companions scream and shout.

Authorities are currently investigating.

A relative of Hong stated that the man was visiting the mountain for the first time and fell from a height of about 100 to 200 meters.

Nama Peak is a  5,588m mountain and is one of Mount Gongga’s side peaks.
