TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ensures that Indonesian citizens residing in the capital of Libya, Tripoli, are safe and unaffected by the armed clashes there.
According to the Director of Citizen Protection Judha Nugraha, the Indonesian Embassy in Tripoli continues to closely monitor the security situation and the condition of Indonesian citizens in Libya following the clashes on May 12.
"No Indonesian citizens were affected, and they are currently safe and calm," Judha said in his brief statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, as quoted by Antara.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Tripoli have been in communication with Indonesian citizens residing in Tripoli, and they are advised to up vigilance, follow the security situation from local authorities, and maintain communication with the embassy.
According to Judha, 535 Indonesians live in Libya, with 302 of them residing in Tripoli. The majority of these citizens are migrant workers, both professionals and those active in the domestic sector, as well as students and Indonesian citizens married to locals.
In emergency situations, Indonesian citizens in Libya are urged to contact the Indonesian Embassy Tripoli hotline at +218-94-481-5608, said the citizen protection director.
"Indonesian citizens planning to travel to Libya are also advised to postpone their trips until the situation returns to a safe and stable state," Judha added.
Armed clashes were reported earlier this week in several areas south of Tripoli, Libya. The head of security for the Presidential Council of Libya, Abdel Ghani Al-Kikli, was reported to have been killed in the midst of the conflict.
The defense authorities of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Libya declared on Tuesday that the military operation in Tripoli had been concluded. Meanwhile, according to the local emergency services, the clashes resulted in the deaths of six people.
Since the overthrow of the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has ceased to be a united country due to the emergence of rival governments. Moreover, there is currently a deadlock between the GNU in Tripoli and the Tobruk-based Government of National Accord (GNS) 'backed' by Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
