Indonesia Faces Potential Rp1,000tn Loss from Online Gambling, Says Govt

6 hours ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Indonesian Communication and Digital Technology (Komdigi) predicts substantial losses due to online gambling practices if serious interventions are not taken to eradicate it. "Without intervention against online gambling, potential losses from this practice could reach Rp1,000 trillion by the end of 2025," said the Director-General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi, Alexander Sabar, at the MinCom Dig office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

Alexander conveyed this information about data from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK). Alexander assessed that online gambling has not only become a legal violation, but has also developed into a tangible digital threat.

According to him, this practice has reached various segments of society and has caused detrimental social impacts. "This online gambling practice has eroded productivity, destroyed family finances, and harmed the prospects of the younger generation," he said.

From October 20, 2024, to May 7, 2025, Komdigi noted that it had blocked as much as 1,385,420 online gambling-related content. Most of this content was found on websites and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, totaling 1,248,405 pieces.

The rest were spread across digital platforms, including Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, with 58,585 pieces, also file-sharing services with 48,370 pieces. Meanwhile, 18,534 pieces were found on Google and YouTube, 10,086 on the X social media platform, 550 on TikTok, 880 on Telegram, and a number of other platforms with 10 pieces.

Komdigi also recorded efforts to crack down on accounts and digital wallet accounts suspected of being involved in online gambling transactions. From July 2023 to May 2025, the ministry submitted 14,478 account numbers and 2,188 e-wallet accounts for handling to the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Bank Indonesia (BI).

Meanwhile, the PPATK recorded that the value of online gambling transactions in the first quarter of 2025 reached Rp47 trillion. This figure indicates an approximately 80 percent decrease compared to the first quarter of 2024, which recorded transactions amounting to Rp90 trillion.

Head of the PPATK, Ivan Yustiavandana, stated that this declining trend could be an early indication of the effectiveness of law enforcement. The threat is significant, so it still needs to be watched out for.
