TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesia's Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance and Enforcement (PSDKP) of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has collaborated with Malaysian authorities to protect protected fish species. "Hunting and smuggling of protected fish species, including turtle eggs, from Indonesia to Malaysia have become crucial issues that require synergy between the two countries," said the Director General of PSDKP of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Pung Nugroho Saksono, in Jakarta on Thursday, 2 October 2025, as quoted from Antara.

A strategic meeting to combat the smuggling of protected fish, plants, and wildlife across the Indonesia-Malaysia border took place on 29-30 September 2025 in Jakarta. Pung explained that the meeting included representatives from ministries, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and Malaysian authorities. "This is to strengthen the surveillance of protected fish species, including law enforcement against cross-border smuggling," he said.

The Indonesian Rehabilitation Initiative for Nature Foundation (YIARI) organized the meeting with PSDKP. Attendees included the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD), the Royal Malaysian Police, and ministries and agencies from Indonesia. The participants agreed to create a coordinated, measurable, and sustainable framework for cooperation to combat smuggling effectively.

According to Pung, the collaboration includes the exchange of information and intelligence, coordinated patrols and joint operations, law enforcement training, and public education. The meeting also recommended the establishment of a joint working group and regular meetings between the authorities of both countries. "In the meeting, the authorized personnel from Indonesia and Malaysia committed to continue preserving biodiversity and eradicating cross-border crimes," said Pung.

He added that the collaborative activities coincide with the Marine and Fisheries Service Dedication Month, commemorating the 26th Anniversary of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Pung is optimistic that the synergy between the two countries, supported by non-governmental organizations, will strengthen the surveillance and protection of protected fish species, as well as enhance sustainable marine and fisheries resource management.

Previously, the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, emphasized the importance of maintaining the sustainability of marine and fisheries resources. He emphasized that all uses must comply with regulations and strike a balance between economic and ecological considerations.
