TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that bilateral cooperation with New Zealand will focus on bolstering strategic partnerships across various strategic sectors.
"New Zealand is a close partner of Indonesia in the Pacific region, and I welcome both nations' commitment to elevating this partnership to a higher level, from spanning defense ties to backing Indonesia's priority national programs," Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said in a ministry statement on Sunday, July 26, as reported by Antara.
The commitment was reaffirmed during a bilateral meeting between Sugiono and his New Zealand counterpart, Winston Peters, on the sidelines of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM/PMC) in Manila, Philippines, on Thursday.
Discussions centered on several key areas, including defense, the execution of the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC), and initiatives addressing nutritional needs for school-age children.
During the talks, both foreign ministers underscored the critical need to secure adequate nutrition for students. Peters conveyed New Zealand's readiness to assist the Indonesian government in enhancing child nutrition, including backing the flagship Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program.
On defense, both ministers endorsed expanding bilateral ties by establishing a Navy-to-Navy Talks forum and exploring a formal Defense Cooperation Arrangement.
The two diplomats also agreed to convene the 13th Indonesia–New Zealand Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) in New Zealand in late August 2026. The ministerial-level forum serves as an important platform to evaluate bilateral progress while fostering tighter collaboration on regional and global stages.
The meeting also reaffirmed Indonesia and New Zealand's resolve to continuously deepen their mutually beneficial partnership.
