TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has passed the revision of the Witness and Victim Protection Law (UU PSDK) on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. One notable change is the inclusion of informant protection.
Article 1 paragraph (6) of the new UU PSDK defines informants as individuals who provide accurate data and/or information in secret regarding a case to the relevant authorities.
Deputy Chairperson of the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), Mahyudin, stated that the previous UU PSDK only regulated protection for witnesses and victims. The revision now expands to include perpetrator witnesses (justice collaborators), reporters, and experts. "Therefore, the newly passed law also adds a new subject of protection, namely informants," Mahyudin stated in his official release on Friday, April 24, 2026.
Unlike other protected subjects, informants are not directly involved in criminal trial processes as regulated in Article 184 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code. Even though the information they provide can be crucial in uncovering a criminal offense.
Mahyudin claims that adding informants as subjects of protection will encourage the disclosure of criminal offenses. Thus far, only parties directly involved in criminal trials have been given protection. However, informants often have crucial information. "The role of informants can shed light on every stage and process of criminal offenses," he said.
Mahyudin revealed that LPSK often finds informants who do not receive protection. This condition makes them reluctant to be involved in criminal trial processes despite having important information.
He firmly believes that the addition will address the challenges LPSK has faced in obtaining information, especially in cases such as corruption. By acknowledging informants as subjects of protection, it is hoped that more parties will be willing to provide information.
"With the new subject in LPSK's protection, individuals will receive protection and a sense of security, which can encourage them to provide data and information as informants," he said.
