TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian cyclist Rendy Varera Sanjaya clinched the gold medal in the Men’s Mountain Bike Cross-Country event at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, contributing to Indonesia’s growing medal tally in cycling.
“Alhamdulillah, I am very grateful, happy, and proud of this achievement,” Rendy said after the award ceremony on Thursday, December 11, 2025, according to a written statement received by Tempo.
The competition, held at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, saw Rendy perform strongly from the preliminary rounds. With steady pedaling and precise technique, he qualified for the final in seventh place, clocking a time of 47.835 seconds.
In the final, Rendy approached the challenging track with focus and composure, ultimately outpacing nine competitors from Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia. Malaysian cyclist Zulfikri Zulkifli finished second, while Filipino athlete Mark Louwel Valderama took third place.
“Honestly, my main target is the downhill event, which is coming up next,” Rendy, a native of Kediri, East Java, said.
“In this race, I gave my best, enjoyed it, and fought hard. If there’s an opportunity at the Asian Games, I would like to compete there.”
Rendy’s victory brings Indonesia’s gold medal count to six, strengthening the nation’s position in the SEA Games 2025 standings. Overall, the Indonesian Mountain Bike team secured one gold and two silver medals in this edition of the Games.
Bayu Priawan Djokosoetono, Indonesia’s Team Chef de Mission, expressed his gratitude for the MTB team’s performance. He praised Rendy and his teammates for their dedication, noting the gold medal win in the cross-country eliminator event.
“There are still more cycling events ahead, and we hope to bring home additional gold medals. Many opportunities remain in other sports as well,” Bayu said. He urged the Indonesian public to continue supporting the athletes, encouraging them to maintain their competitive spirit and proudly represent the country.
Rendy, who has been part of the national downhill cycling team since 2010, also represented Indonesia at the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam. He began his downhill career in 2011, competing in the men’s youth hobby category, and earned his first podium finish in 2014, securing third place in the men’s youth class.
